Self-Care, It’s More Than Just A Face Mask

Self Care Blog

The phrase self-care is thrown around a lot these days, but as far as I’m concerned, self-care is an absolute non-negotiable for moms; not a luxury. We need it to recharge and become the best versions of ourselves, which has a positive knock-on effect for our families.

Many people assume that self-care is all about bubble baths and face masks, but I tend to disagree. Self-care is defined as “The actions and practices which will protect and enhance all aspects of your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being”. This means that it’s not a selfish act, nor is it always self-indulgent. It’s an action that will centre and ground you, bring you back to who you are at your core, in all areas of your life.
This is so incredibly important for parents, we’ve all heard the saying that you can’t pour from an empty cup, right? Well, self-care is one of the best ways to fill your cup, in essence, recharge those batteries.

How to Practice Self-Care

So, what are some ways to practice self-care? Well it’s quite a personal thing, but here are some ideas that may appeal to you:

  1. Moving your body: If being out in the open for a run, or a good sweat session in the gym makes you feel energised and like you can take on the world again, make it a habit! If you prefer to walk your dog that is great too. The important thing here is to move in a way that feels good to you.
  2. Fulfilling yourself spiritually: This is so important, it’s part of our foundation of being a person. Whether it’s practicing meditation, going to church or spending time in prayer, connecting to your spiritual self will have a profound effect.
  3. Make peace with your emotions: If you need to forgive, make positive steps towards that; if you feel like you need to be more empathetic, find small ways where you can practice it.
    – Financially: this may seem odd, but finances play such a huge role in our stress levels, if you can somehow help to alleviate this, it will be one of the ultimate acts of self-care!
  4. Creating a support structure: This is probably one of the most important things you can do, having people around that will lift you up and support you in your time of need.

Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a time and a place for bubble baths and pedicures, but it’s also so important that we get to the root of what is draining us, and spend time trying to alleviate this cause. Once you get that right, the difference that it will make to your life is indescribable!
